the common factor in failure is a symlinked /var directory, all the
directories underneath seem to be the same.  It's just that cupsys does
not like the symlinkg

# ls -l /
...
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root root     9 2007-08-31 15:22 var -> /home/var
...

from an offending machine:

# df -h
