Public bug reported:
Hardy updated as of today (19th March) - Kubuntu
I am trying to get the built-in mics (and the external one) working, but no
success yet.
BUT, having plugged in headphones to the first jack, and enabling the first
'Capture' on the 'Input' tab of KMix, the actual body of the laptop acts as a
microphone! I can hear it through the headphones by tapping anywhere on the
case, scratching the case with my fingers or even gently touching the case - it
sounds very loud through the headphones.
The built-in mics and the external one don't work.
The problem:
When, after enabling all the 'Capture' and other 'inputs' on the 'Input' tab, I
removed the headphones from the jack - I got a terrible howling coming from the
laptops speakers - very loud indeed! I could not shut down the laptop as very
quickly it froze and I had to pull the battery.
When I restarted the laptop it happened again as soon as I logged in - pulled
the battery again.
Next time I inserted the headphones before logging in but then in KMix I
noticed that the 'Input' values had all been zeroed - I have disabled al the
inputs for just now.
I can only imagine that there is a connection between the laptop case
acting as a kind-of-microphone and perhaps some sort of feedback to the
speakers??...
I don't really want to experiment with this bug - I'm sure pulling the
battery isn't that good for the laptop.
