dbus is running, and I also get this dbus error message with a newly created user in a blank home directory. However, since I initially reported this bug, I have reinstalled xubuntu from current-live 3-15. Totem now only lags unresponsively for approximately 1 second before starting playback, however I still recieve the dbus error.
