The problem was caused by me not knowing that in order for Ubuntu to 
recognise an external drive, said drive must first be removed from Windows 
via "Safely Remove Hardware".
How come none of you geniuses could tell me this?
As a result I changed my OS to Linux Mint: it's prettier than Ubuntu and its 
forum is actually helpful.
  Go figure.
