I have an Inspiron 2600, I got Ubuntu 7.1 to install, but not much else.

You need to download the ALTERNATE CD, when you go to download the
regular one on Ubuntu's site, down at the bottom it says "Check here if
you need the Alternate CD" or something like that. The Alt CD is a text
only installer. The 2600 apparently can't run the graphics for the
install so you end up with the washout colors, which I had as well. The
text only install works OK, its is a little distorted, but you can still
read the options well enough to install.

I was also able to do a graphics install, when I had to reinstall it
becuause I messed something up, by hooking up the Video-out on the
laptop to a 19" inch LCD monitor, somehow it worked, and the LiveCD
eventually started up, don't ask me why, but it worked. But if you
disconnect the regular monitor you just go back to crazy colors. The
laptop screen does let you see the command line though once you install
Ubuntu. But it's really zoomed in and you can only see about half the
field, so it's pretty useless.

I'm still looking for how to fix all this, hopefully someone has done it
before.
