Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.24
Without irqpoll, it says
irq 19: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)
Pid: 0, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.24-12-generic #1

Disabling IRQ #19
... Then later, it hangs for a while, and eventually says
ata1.00: qc timeout (cmd 0x27)
ata1.00: failed to read native max address (err_mask=0x4)
ata1: failed to recover some devices, retrying in 5 secs
... this repeats three times, ending with
ata1.00: revalidation failed (errno=-5)
ata1.00: disabled
ata1: soft resetting link
ata1: EH complete
Then it goes on booting, and doesn't find the disk, so it gets confused
trying to mount root.
I'll post system information next.
