Setting it to NONE should definitely not cause it to become slower, my
system is actually a lot more responsive (faster) with it set to NONE so
that is why I have it set that way. You should file another bug about
that so that someone can determine what is going on with your system.
With compiz not running you would be running the regular metacity window
manager which doesn't use opengl so should be at least as fast as compiz
and in many cases run much faster and uses less power so would likely
save battery if run on a laptop as well.
