Quoting the mailing list that it was turned down on: "My experience is that the majority of users who run Linux on Apple hardware are also used to MacOS, and so maintaining consistency with it is worthwhile. That's entirely independent of the fact that altering this in the kernel would change the default behaviour of the system for users who are upgrading, which would be highly confusing.
