I've isolated and confirmed the behavior based on a related bug report on the openoffice site (which sounds *exactly* like mine, though it was closed in Jan2007). If I begin the Impress presentation slideshow on a video slide, every video in the presentation works. If I start on a text slide, well, there's the problem. The OpenOffice bug page is here: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=53514. I assume if they fixed it then, they can fix it now. The only apparent different between my bug and that one is that I'm running Linux and that is for XP.
