Here is some more information about what is going on. I am running lirc-0.8.2-0ubuntu8. I have used the graphical tool to configure the hardware.conf file. I have told it I have a built-in IR port (I selected SIR driver). I have copied the MCE remote lircd.conf file into /etc/lirc/lircd.conf
This is the SiR driver loading: [ 1164.188000] lirc_dev: IR Remote Control driver registered, at major 61 [ 1164.212000] lirc_dev: lirc_register_plugin: sample_rate: 0 [ 1164.212000] lirc_sir: I/O port 0x03e8, IRQ 4. [ 1164.212000] lirc_sir: Installed.
