I do not know about the compatibility of the different java plugins, but this 
fix was effectively reversed by the fix of bug 203636.
ubuntu-restricted-extras depends on icedtea-gcjwebplugin now, which depends on
openjdk-6-jre, not icedtea7.

Reopening to make clear this is not fixed.
This should either be marked as invalid or fixed again, which would reopen bug 
203636.
Are there any references that or why icedtea-java7-plugin works better on amd64?
