Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: nvidia-glx
If you remove the nvidia-glx from your system, it does not remove an
entry in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local which blacklists the nvidia_new
module. Therefore, if you subsequently install nvidia-glx-new, the
nvidia module (instead of nvidia_new) will be loaded, and you'll get a
version mismatch when you try to start X.
The workaround is to remove the "nvidia_new" line from
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local so that the proper module is loaded.
This is in Hardy beta 1, nvidia-glx package 1:96.43.05+2.6.24.11-12.31
and nvidia-glx-new package 169.12+2.6.24.11-12.31
** Affects: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New

Switching between nvidia-glx to nvidia-glx-new leaves nvidia_new module in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local
