I think I'm having a similar problem. Sometimes devices mount, sometimes they don't. Udev seems to create the device files correctly and with the right permissions. Gparted picks up the partitions fine fine, and my girlfriend's computer with gutsy auto mounts them all correctly (2 FAT partitions, one EXT3).
