I experience the same behavior with Ubuntu 7.10 and SUSE 10.3 and
Mandriva 8 on my "Lenovo 3000 N200 0687-2DU". It seems that the Newest
Linux kernels are having problems with SATA interfaces in relation to
CDROM and DVDROM drives {I beleive the DVDrom drives on these Lenovo
machines are connected to the SATA interface along with the harddrive
unit}. The Ubuntu live disk works great as do the install routines on
all distros, the drive only becomes disabled after the complete install.
If you are running a dual boot machine check to see if your Windows
access to the cdrom drive is also disabled after the Linux install.I have tried , bois updates on the machine, and even tried new installs from external DVDrom drives to no avail.
