HI, I think the problem has to do with the Soundblaster Board. It worked perfect in Ubuntu 7.04. After that the Ubuntu team has screwed it heavily.
Now I heard that it might not be due to Ubuntu per se but due to Gnome. So I think I will try Kubuntu 7.10 and/or Kubuntu Hardy. Please report here if that fixes your mic problem.
