Can you ssh into the box from another machine? If so, please see if you
can get a backtrace (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingXorg for
directions).
If you are not able to ssh into the box, it's possible you're seeing a
kernel issue rather than an X issue. Please verify this by exiting X
(shut down gdm), and then putting the machine into hibernation (I think
running /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh should do it). If it still fails, it's a
kernel bug.
