I've just tested loading gdmsetup (with 'gksu gdmsetup' command) without
moving .gtk-bookmarks, and it loads fine without any error messages now.
I looked in the /root directory (as root) to see if .gtk-bookmarks had
been created by some other method, but it still doesn't exist there.

Having said that, on previous attempts I would get exactly what
Pjotr12345 reported.

I too have a clean Hardy install with all updates applied.
