Is this still a problem on your system after setting defaults? Setting defaults
in perferred apps or in update-alternatives should do the same thing, just less
confusing, less choices in perferred apps menu. If this is still a problem
please reopen the bug report and let us know what *-desktop package it is a
problem on and if its just with Thunderbird and Firefox.
