I CANNOT confirm this is an encoding issue.

Working on the plain console with umlauts works as fine as working on
konsole with the special charakters, such as ä, ö, ü and ß. Aspell also
perfectly recognizes words with umlauts, as long as they are spelled
correctly. However, when I am trying to type umlauts in the "replace
word" dialog ("r" hotkey), I just see an empty space for every umlaut I
type in.

I use aspell 0.60.5-1ubuntu1 on Kunbutu 7.10.

Besides this aspell issue, there aren't any other umlaut issues on my
system that I am aware of.
