Public bug reported:
This is really multiple problems, all of which work together in a way
that makes it almost impossible for my machine to display the right time
(this is Ubuntu 8.04 beta, with current updates, and freshly rebooted,
too; the installation is a fresh one, but I kept my old /home from
Ubuntu 7.10).
I live in Germany (UTC + 1 or 2, I think). This weekend we switched to
daylight saving time, but it seems that my PC did not quite get the
news. I have set Europe/Berlin as timezone, so I think this should work
automatically, or at least offer me a daylight saving option.
The Gnome clock applet also has no information whatsoever about what
time it is. If I tell it to sync the clock via NTP, it sets the clock
to 8PM, while it is 10PM now (9PM old time). As I suppose the UTC time
did not change, I wonder why the system does not set the timezone
correctly.
Workaround, *very* ugly, is to set 'configuration' in the Gnome
time+date settings to 'manual', then set the time to 0:15, which sets
the clock to 10:15PM local time. What's this? I thought I'm UTC plus 1
or 2, not minus 1 or 2. Anyhow, it is *very* confusing to the user
what's going on.
By the way, another problem: you have to select the Date+Time settings
from the system menu. Selecting "adjust date+time" from the clock
applet menu does display a dialog, but "set system time" in that dialog
does not do anything except closing that dialog.
What I'd like my system to do:
* allow me to either set current UTC time OR get the current time from NTP
* allow me to set the timezone and/or daylight saving mode
* set the correct local time from those settings. AFAIR, previous Ubuntus
(been running them for two years now) did all this correctly, though IIRC I
always used manual clock, not NTP.
If I'm doing it wrong, I'd appreciate some help on how to configure my
system right, but it seems that something is just broken.
