Some more observations on this: it seems that adjusting the time is not
instantaneous, so the clock applet does not update its time even when I
click "synchronize" on the system time setter. Again very confusing.
(I just noticed, my clock applet displayed 11:20 instead of 10:20, so I
reset the system time back for an hour, but I had to logout/login to see
the effect in the clock applet. Whyever system time should be
11:something when my local time is 10:something).

Another thing that's missing: there is no option to set the time zone
for the login screen gdm (or I missed it). It just showed 11:20 (i.e.,
my system time), while I'd like it to show local time (10:20).
