Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04 beta date of file 19-03-2008. (running through Wubi on a Vista
laptop).
In previous Ubuntu installations it has been possible to use "Connect to
Server" to attach a public Window share through Samba and automatically get a
permanent icon/shortcut on the desktop. With this edition your are asked for a
password - (even if non is required as reported in another bug report). By
selecting "cancel" on the "Enter password" window the connection is made though
and an icon is placed on the desktop, but this icon is gone next time you start
Ubuntu. During the session where the icon/shortcut is created it is possible
to use the shortcut to open the Windows share initially, but very often you
will get an error that no application is available for opening the shortcut.
