Public bug reported:

Similar to "Bug #112239", but with additional info:

I've been using 7.10 for a while, and 7.02 before that. I've encountered
this "bug" with both of them, so I'm hoping it will be fixed before
8.0's release:

I have Ubuntu on its own dedicated IDE drive. I also have WindowsXP
installed on a SATA based RAID-0 set. I boot Ubuntu using the CD so that
when there is no CD in the drive, XP boots by default.

Short version: When Ubuntu does its occasional forced disk check,
it alters the MBR (Master Boot Record) of my "C:" drive so that it can
no longer find my RAID set. It is easily fixable by booting the Windows
CD and running "FIXMBR" from the Recovery Console, but it is an
extraordinary pain and I fear that one day my luck will run out.

Ubuntu's diskcheck should not be altering the MBR on a system using
RAID.

Long version: IDE drives are always detected before the RAID
drivers install, so by default, no matter your boot priority, your RAID
set can not be C: when used in conjunction with IDE drives. If you
install Windows on your RAID set, the MBR of your C: drive...
which will be your first IDE drive... tells the computer where to
find Windows (ie: on another drive).

When Ubuntu does its own checkdisk, it "fixes" the MBR of the C: drive,
and as a result, the computer can no longer find your Windows
installation.

I imagine if Ubuntu was installed on the same RAID set as Windows, this
wouldn't be a problem. But I prefer to have Ubuntu installed on it's own
dedicated HDD to avoid any conflicts.

Ubuntu should never attempt to "fix" the MBR if there is
a RAID set present on the system that it doesn't have access
to.

Thanks.
