It has been a long while since I last encountered this "bug", so forgive
me for adding details "after the fact".
After using "FIXMBR" from the WinXP CD "Recovery Console", while XP now
loads again just fine, when I try to boot Ubuntu from the Install/boot
CD as before (the last option: boot from hard drive), I get:
NTLDR missing.
Press ALT-CTRL-DELETE to reboot.
I don't remember how I got Ubuntu working again the last time this
happened... IF I even fixed it at all. If I had, I'm sure I would of
written the procedure down somewhere. As it is, I can no longer boot my
Ubuntu installation. I'm certain all the files are still there on its
(dedicated) IDE drive, the system just can't boot it.
I have tried "grub-install" and "fsck", neither of which were any help
(after installing Grub, Windows boots like it's not even there, ignoring
it completely). I tried installing a Boot Loader from CD ("GAG"), but it
didn't work either (couldn't load WinXP on my RAID or find Ubuntu on
dev/hdd/).
If re-installing Ubuntu from scratch can restore my ability to boot
Ubuntu from the CD, there should be a way to fix this without completely
wiping out my existing installation.
Suddenly, this bug is FAR MORE SERIOUS than a simple annoyance. :(
