The failure happens because the gnome debconf frontend can not connect
to the DISPLAY for some reason:

Setting up xserver-xorg (1:7.3+10ubuntu7) ...
No protocol specified
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0 at 
/usr/share/perl5/Debconf/FrontEnd/Gnome.pm line 60.
dpkg: error processing xserver-xorg (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

It would be good if debconf would fallback to a different frontend (e.g.
dialog) in this case.
