i think with the general tendency to widescreen displays the current horizontal bars oriented user interface is outmoded and has to be rethought. in gnome you have two task bars and every application has a titlebar, a menubar and an icon bar. firefox adds to this it's bookmark bar, tab bar and status bar. and if you don't take care after a while there is added a google and yahoo and whatsoever bar. in the end there' s no horizontal space left to recognize a web page.
