Tried to reproduce the problem with Hardy Heron, but could not. It seems to be fixed in Hardy Heron. I also removed Network Manager on Gutsy and installed Wicd which still uses the madwifi driver and all the wpa-supplicant resources. The problem disappeared. This seems to provide some evidence there was a problem with Network Manager in Gutsy that has been fixed in Hardy.
