I have installed the boot loader "gag" and then reinstalled Ubuntu 7.10.
The DVD now still works under Windows Vista but again not under Ubuntu.
When I click on the CD-ROM1 icon it says that /dev/scd0 does not exist.
I have created this directory but on reboot it is not there.
I have tried to edit /boot/loader.conf with acpi_load="NO" but this also does
not work.
At least I can read my dvd/cds with Windows.
