This also happens in firebird2.1-super.
I modified my /etc/init.d/firebird2.1-super:

FBGROUP="firebird"

if [ -d $FBRUNDIR ]; then
        #do nothing
        echo "Directory '$FBRUNDIR' already exists."
else
        mkdir -p $FBRUNDIR
        chown $FBUSER:$FBGROUP -R $FBRUNDIR
fi
