I recommend this bug be closed, as it is not a problem originating with either xorg or Ubuntu, but with the proprietary nvidia driver. I also own a laptop with integrated nvidia graphics (8400M GS). The README.txt supplied with the driver explains both the issue and the workaround, which is fully discussed above.
If we, as nvidia graphics owners, desire a change in the way the driver works, then we have to request this of NVIDIA through proper channels.
