Ok, I've gotten through more of that manual install after 'server'
install now.

On doing dpkg-reconfiguer xserver-xorg I note that when it gets to the
bit about monitor auto-detection and I let it attempt this the screen
goes blank, but only briefly, in the same way as it did, permanently,
when trying the default install. In my specific case this is a 100%
black/blank screen with the exception of two character cells being solid
white (as if there are text cursors at both locations).

So, once more, this bug is presumably something awry with video
detection in the default installer.
