I found the "fix" to recover from this bug here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows#head-f5b2b33b369cf4e319ad0f1df557c42290ba2d33

The steps in most of the examples did not work for me. Here is what I
did to return by system back to the way it was before (ie: booting
Windows by default from a SATA RAID set, and booting Ubuntu... residing
on IDE2... using the Ubuntu CD and selecting "Boot from Hard Drive" from
the menu (do this ONLY AFTER you are once again able to access/boot
Windows):

o Download the "Super Grub Disk" .iso image at the above link and burn the
image to a CD.
o Reboot your PC, booting from the CD.
o "Super Grub" runs. Wait for the menu with all the different options to appear
(a menu with one option appears first, auto-selects and continues.)
o Select "Super Grub Disk" from the menu with or without "Help" ("no Help" is
faster).
o Choose your preferred language from the next menu.
o First option on next menu should be "Grub/Linux". Hit Enter.
o Select "Fix boot of Gnu/Linux", hit Enter. This will write a new MBR to the
drive that contains your Linux installation.
o Another menu should come up listing your Linux installation(s) and the drive
it is on. Select your Linux drive and hit Enter.
Doing this is the Linux equivalent of running "FIXMBR" in the Windows
Recovery Console, except it only writes to the drive Linux is on.)
o Hit Enter again when done (about <1 second) to get to next menu.
o Two choices: "Halt PC" or "Reboot PC". Select Reboot and THEN eject CD after
the reboot program loads/runs.

If you boot as normal, Windows should load by default. If you insert the
Ubuntu CD, you should be able to "Boot from Hard Disk" again.
