I can't reproduce it either. When you select "Open Recent" in the "File" menu it initializes a gtk.RecentChooserMenu, which uses gtk.RecentManager to parse and filter $HOME/.recently-used.xbel.
You could try removing or renaming that file, although if there are some problems with the file, it should come up with other applications using gtk.Recent* as well. If the file is very big (there's no limit to its growth!), it will take a while to parse and filter it.
