Binary package hint: network-manager
Network Manager allows to connect to via ppp via the menu to one of the
peers defined in /etc/ppp/peers, but does not indicate the status of
this connection.
The same is true for a modem connection configured using the "manually
configure network" entry.
It should at least provide some feedback if a connection is established
via nm.
