But I'm sorry, it seems like it's not hal-info after all that caused this. I 
just updated another test install I have on my notebook and the reason for this 
issue is that *some* package edited the ~/.dbus folder in my home directory so 
it's not accessible for the "normal" user anymore:

$ ls -al | grep dbus
drwx------  3 root root     4096 2008-03-25 17:53 .dbus

How can I find out which update caused this?

The reason I thought it was hal-info was that it wasn't until I
downgraded this one that I restarted dbus via 'sudo /etc/init.d/dbus
restart'. I guess that restored the proper rights.
