Quick update:

Upon further investigation it turns out that both applications are
neither installed, nor available through synaptic. So for some reason
the menu entries are listed in the Gnome menu editor, but the
applications themselves are not present.

I don't know which of the two things is supposed to happen, but I see
two options:

1) Remove the entries from the menu editor (in case they officially have been 
replaced by other software), or
2) Make the software available through synaptic and have it installed by 
default (like it used to be on Gutsy).
