My current understanding of this bug is that:

- the filtering is only an issue when "subpixel smoothing" is selected in the 
system font preferences, which is not the default for hardy
- it is not a commonly observed problem; it may only affect systems with a 
specific dpi(?)
- a workaround is available
- the behavior is consistent with what was shipped with Ubuntu 7.10
- no fix is in evidence that we can be assured won't be a regression elsewhere

based on the above I am dropping the 8.04 milestone from this bug and
marking it as a "target of opportunity" instead.
