Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati
When I run Firefox-3, it initially scrolls as you would expect, ie when you scroll via the the up/down arrow keys or mouse wheel, it responds quickly. However, a few seconds after loading and or scrolling on certain webpages (eg http://www.theage.com.au/news/news/flight-of-the- airlines/2008/04/04/1207249417449.html seems to do it consistently for me), it starts to scroll 'jerkily', by which I mean that when you scroll it scrolls first a couple of lines, then pauses, then another couple of lines, then pauses, etc. The scrolls get queued, so that it continues scrolling after you stop. If you queue up enough, Firefox will even grey out (ie it is failing to respond). Note that this is only when I scroll the contents of an entire tab - for instance, this box that I'm typing this description into scrolls fine but the entire page scrolls jerkily. It only seems to happen with the combination of xserver-xorg-video-ati using EXA acceleration and compiz. It doesn't do it if I disable EXA; it doesn't do it with the fglrx driver; and it doesn't do it in metacity. I suspect that flash animations *might* be causing the problem to occur. Two workarounds I've found are: - If I resize the firefox window, scrolling goes back to normal. - If I issue a 'killall firefox' command and restart firefox (and select restore). The jerky scrolling also happens in OpenOffice spreadsheets for me but I'm not sure why.
