Hi Saïvann,

Sorry about this; it's all got pushed into the background by other
things.

1. If you disable usplash from the Grub menu.lst file, do you still get this
problem (I just want to make sure).
Yes, the problem remains, though if I can switch cleanly into a virtual
terminal (Alt+F1) there is no problem shutting down from there. Very
occasionally, however, making that switch induces the white-out and lock-up!
Interestingly if it is the first shutdown after a white-out and lock-up the
'halt' process always hangs for a while at shutting down gnome-desktop before
continuing. Once a clean halt has been accomplished the gnome-desktop shuts
down immediately and the process goes normally.

2. At shutdown, do you get any error messages? If yes, can you copy the errors
here?
I don't know: along with the 'white out' is a complete freeze (I know I lose
all my bash history).

3. Can you attach your /var/log/kern.log file?
Yes, but not right now (I'm not on that machine).

4. Can you attach the file created by this command on a terminal? lspci -nnvv >
lspci.txt
Yes (but as above).
