Is it possible that this is just a UI misunderstanding? I can't quite
tell from your report, but the fact that it worked with automatic
partitioning seems to support this theory. With a blank disk, the
partitioner will indeed initially offer a list that just has the device
in it, and no "free space" entry. You must press "New partition table",
after which you will get a "free space" entry and can create partitions.

Am I completely off-base here?
