I installed the ppa xine-lib and first tests are very promising. I have some crashers with demux mkv, but don't know if they are related to the pulse audio change or some other dependencies. I wasn't able to test various formats yet and my only setup is a notebook with 2 channel audio output. At least the 5.1 to 2.0 downmix works fine and all channels are controllable in volume meter - this wasn't possible with the old plugin.
Sidenote: the PPA packages are problematic to install, as there are ... ubuntu1~ppa1_i386.deb and ... ubuntu2+ppa1~hardy_i386.deb where the first one has the pulseaudio patch, but the second one is considered newer.
