In all my testing I usually remove "quiet splash" to watch the boot
messages which explains why I was unable to reproduce it. I also found
this does indeed affect x86_64 as well. Because I run development
kernels I never have the "quiet" option enabled - hence my not being
affected.

I've rewritten the bug title since it appears to affect more machines.

So, the revised work-around is to remove the "quiet" option from the
kernel command line. If you're using an installed system, do this in
/boot/grub/menu.lst and maybe change the default koptions.

For the LiveCD, press "F6" when the menu appears, press "End" to get to
the end of the command line, and then use back-space to delete the
"quiet" option. Press Enter to continue to boot.
