I'm having a similar issue with tap:aio: but it isn't limited to cdroms. I too can't use tap:aio: for cdroms but also, Xen immediately does a poweroff if using tap:aio for a disk on *some* disks. Using older images that I've used in the past, tap:aio works, but if I create a new sparse file with dd, tap:aio fails with pretty much no errors. I've commented on the issue on xen-users.
