problem area:
Investigating vlc
Package vlc has broken dep on ttf-dejavu
Considering ttf-dejavu 3 as a solution to vlc 1
Removing vlc rather than change ttf-dejavu
Which leads us to:
Investigating ttf-dejavu-core
Package ttf-dejavu-core has broken dep on ttf-dejavu
Considering ttf-dejavu 3 as a solution to ttf-dejavu-core 4
Added ttf-dejavu to the remove list
Fixing ttf-dejavu-core via remove of ttf-dejavu
As to why that happens requires someone with greater knowledge than me
