I have a similar issue which I added here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/201483. I'm not sure how close this issue is but I get trapped in BusyBox after I update to latest in Hardy. This seems to be a more active bug so I'm going to keep my status here.
