I've got the problem again with my up to date installation of hardy.
It's pretty impossible to recreate the problem with a hardy live cd,
because the problem occours now and then, without any reason. The
workaround andrjas posted worked here too. After deleting
~/.config/totem/state.ini, totem started like usual. Here's the content
of my state.ini before i deleted the file

window_w=1280
window_h=1024
show_sidebar=false
maximised=false
sidebar_w=998
sidebar_page=properties
---
and here the file after i restarted totem
---
[State]
window_w=873
window_h=476
show_sidebar=true
maximised=false
sidebar_w=247
sidebar_page=playlist
---
