i have upgraded to hardy heron
all problems have been solved with the upgrade
had one small issue with gnome daemon but that was fixed a couple of
days ago
as a complete newby to ubuntu thanks for all the help that has been
offered

Enabling Xgl with fglrx ATi drivers...
the bug leaves a black shadow on the desktop where a box used to be
i can clear the box by going into compiz manager and then selecting and
deselecting the water effect
it is also cleared by selecting and deselected other effects
