The bootup splashscreen does not appear at startup. X's "failed to start
the X server" message comes up, n a 640x480 window that sits in the
centre of the LCD (the rest is black).
On switching to vt1, the messages above the login are
"Starting up...
usplash: No usable theme found for 640x480
screen init failed"
