One additional comment. I disabled the Ubuntu restricted NVidia driver
and installed the 173.08 Beta driver from NVidia's site.

This fixed the massive corruption of Metacity decorations under Compiz,
but hasn't fixed the TV-out issue, leading me to believe that the issue
is with Ubuntu 8.04, not the NVidia drivers.

I've also investigated physical causes for the problem. I have two of
the same video card in this computer (connected with an SLI bridge).
I've tried disabling the bridge. I've tried both cards. I've tried
replacing the cable. I've tried using the cable from another computer
(running Ubuntu 7.10), which worked.
