Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: connect-proxy

I have a home network linking 2 6.06 computers w/ smb.
I use dialup: server/Agere winmodem, client/Intel537EP.

In addition to the fact that I seem to have to manually edit Networking,
Firestarter, and Proxy, and switch off my network box in order to go
online with the client }|-( ...

In order for Synaptic to download packages through direct dialup on the
client, 192.168.0.1, I have to go into Network Proxy and change the
server from 192.168.0.2:80 to 192.168.0.1:80, referring to the box I am
on, AND check direct connection to the internet.

I'm sorry, but the way a GUI works is that you check an option and it
applies.

I shouldn't have to edit my proxy server in order not to use it.

That's like having to open up the light switch and rewire it in order to
turn the lights on and off.

In fact, I want my non-sudoers (wife and kids, AKA Human Beings) to be
able to use this option. Without knowing the gory details about
Networking.

I apologize for my sarcasm, but I want to make sure that I am clear in
communicating my point. If I were not such a gnubie maybe I could use
clearer language.

Though sarcasm hopefully gives you a chuckle.

Thanks,

Coby

PS maybe you could suggest to developers that all networking packages be
linked or put in a common GUI so that there are no redundant options
that override one another.

I'm already confused by the need to set a gateway AND allow hosts AND
set DNS servers just to make one connection! Not to mention having to
configure Proxy and Firestarter.
